Miyuki Sakai

Grazing through the pages of Martha Stewart Living this month I came upon an art form I had not yet identified: sketching with thread. Artist Miyuki Sakai contributed eight 'plates' that she created using only her imagination, a sewing machine and her favourite brand of thread. She is quite prolific, living and working in San Francisco with more than 20 years experience as a master sewer. She grew up in Osaka, Japan, and trained in Kyoto before moving to Tokyo and then to California. Below are images she has created, not using paint or coloured pencils or conté but thread. Her website is a treasure trove of inspiration: click here to see more.
The image with the pie is from the June issue of Martha Stewart Living. The editors placed actual desserts on her handmade 'plates.' The effect was striking.
